Plan running when you have asthma

If exercise or cold air triggers asthma symptoms, plan running with the clinician or asthma nurse who helps manage your condition.

If exercise or cold air triggers asthma symptoms, plan running with the clinician or asthma nurse who helps manage your condition. A face covering, breathing drill or running app is not a replacement for an asthma action plan or prescribed treatment.

Agree what to do before and during activity

The NHS asthma guidance recommends getting advice about exercising safely when exercise triggers symptoms. Discuss your triggers, symptom control and the instructions in your personal action plan. Follow your prescribed medication advice; this page does not set inhaler doses or change treatment.

Know what worsening symptoms mean for you and when to stop or seek help. Keep the treatment and contact arrangements required by your plan accessible. Do not leave essential medication behind to make carrying a phone easier.

Choose conditions and a route you can change

Check whether cold, pollution, pollen or another known trigger affects the planned outing. A route with an easy return may be more suitable than one that leaves you far from help. For a group, explain any relevant arrangements to the person supporting you without sharing more health information than you want to.

In cold weather, ask your care team whether a particular face covering or adjustment is appropriate. Product claims about warming air do not establish that a mask prevents an asthma attack. Avoid forcing a breathing technique to continue through symptoms.

Use tracking as a record

If useful, keep a note of the conditions, activity and symptoms to discuss at review. Pace, heart rate and GPS can describe parts of the outing, but they cannot diagnose whether asthma is controlled or confirm that symptoms are safe to ignore.

If you believe you are having an asthma attack, follow your action plan and seek urgent help as directed. Call the local emergency service for an emergency. A live spectator link cannot provide emergency assessment or guaranteed response.

For ordinary kit and weather planning alongside your care plan, see winter conditions and heat and humidity. Runwiv's planned social-running features do not provide asthma treatment or medical clearance.
